Elinor Ostrom

Elinor Ostrom, épouse de Vincent Ostrom, est née le 7 août 1933 à Los Angeles, est professeur de sciences politiques à l'Université d'Indiana à Bloomington et directrice du Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity à l'Université d'État de l'Arizona. Ses travaux portent principalement sur la théorie de l'action collective et des biens publics. Dans la croisée des chemins de la théorie des clubs de James Buchanan et du courant néo-institutionnel, elle a reçu en octobre 2009, le « Prix Nobel » d'économie, avec Oliver Williamson.

Elinor Ostrom s'est efforcée, à partir d'une analyse néo-institutionnelle, de montrer que des associations (clubs) peuvent gérer de manière économiquement optimale des biens collectifs. Elle a analysé que des arrangements institutionnels avaient permis la gestion collective de nombreux écosystèmes sans conduire à leur effondrement.
