Douglas W. Allen, né le 15 août 1960, est un économiste américain qui avoue devoir l'essentiel de sa motivation de chercheur à l'apport de Ronald Coase et de sa théorie des coûts de transaction. Il est diplômé en 1983 (B.A.) et en 1984 (M.A) à l'université Simon Fraser. Il obtient son doctorat en 1988 à l'université de Washington sous la direction de Yoram Barzel. Ses domaines d'intérêt portent sur la théorie des prix et sur l'organisation industrielle.
