Lawrence W. Reed a vécu à Beaver Falls, en Pennsylvanie (USA). De là, il choisit de faire ses études au Grove City College. Il en sort diplômé. Il est ensuite titulaire d'un Master en histoire à l'Université d'Etat du Slippery Rock. Il est un ancien président du State Policy Network et enseignant au département d'économie à l'Université de Northwood à Midland, dans l'Etat du Michigan. Il organisait des séminaires annuels sur le thème de la liberté.
Il fut le président du Mackinac Center for Public Policy, think tank fondé dans l'Etat du Michigan (USA), spécialisé dans la recherche du marché de l'éducation. Il fut membre du bureau d'administration de la Foundation for Economic Educaiton de 1996 à 2001. Il en est actuellement le nouveau président.
Au cours de ces dernières années, il fut l'auteur de plus de 750 articles de journaux, 300 commentaires de radio, des dizaines d'articles de magazine, et de quatre livres.
