Max Hartwell (1921 - 2009) est né en Australie. Il a passé la majeure partie de sa carrière en Grande Bretagne en tant qu'historien économique. De 1956 à 1977, il était enseignant au "Recent Social and Economic History and Professorial Fellow" au College Nuffield College à Oxford. Il a fait des recherches principalement en histoire économique. De 1957 à 1972, il fut rédacteur en chef de la "Economic History Review". Il est reconnu comme historien pour avoir combattu la thèse populiste des écrivains tels que Charles Dickens, qui ont donné l'image de la révolution industrielle comme une période de misère effroyable pour la population ouvrière de la Grande Bretagne.

Max Hartwell a été également président de la société du Mont-Pèlerin de 1992 à 1994, succédant à Gary Becker et cédant sa place à Pascal Salin. Cette association fut fondée par Friedrich Hayek afin de promouvoir et de discuter des idées libérales et de leur application dans la société.
