Douglas J. Den Uyl

Douglas J. Den Uyl est conseiller politique au Heartland Institute et vice-Président de l'association "Education for the Liberty Fund". Il fut auparavant Professeur de Philosophie à l'université Bellarmine. Il a publié des livres et des articles sur les thèmes de l'Ethique, de la théorie politique et de l'histoire de la philosophie.

Douglas Den Uyl a passé son enfance dans une banlieue de Détroit sous l'influence politique conservatrice de ses parents. Par jeu de provocation, sa mère lui lance le défi de lire, lorsqu'il était adolescent, le plus gros livre de la maison. Ce fut le livre écrit par Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged. A l'université, Tibor Machan l'encouragea dans la poursuite des idées d'Ayn Rand avec ses autres amis comme Eric Mack. Douglas Den Uyl fut particulièrement passionné par l'intuition puissante d'Ayn Rand de relier la pensée d'Aristote avec celle du libéralisme.

En compagnie de Douglas Rasmussen, il s'est intéressé à une des vertus cardinales des classiques : la prudence, les autres étant la justice, la tempérance et le courage. Les deux auteurs se sont posés la question de savoir pourquoi, la prudence était devenue une non-vertu à l'époque moderne. Chez Ayn Rand, il a observé son épistémologie du réalisme classique et sa défense du libéralisme du point de vue de l'éthique aristotélicienne plutôt que de l'éthique moderne. Ayn Rand utilise une défense morale comme base de nos propres actions, attention qui est le premier ordre de notre être.
