Mark Thornton est un économiste américain qui adhère aux principes de l'école autrichienne d'économie. Il est un grand spécialiste de l'économiste Richard Cantillon, souvent présenté comme un précurseur de l'école autrichienne d'économie. Libéral et scientifique, Mark Thornton fait partie du bureau éditorial du Journal of Libertarian Studies. Il est également membre du réseau de la faculté "FEE" (Foundation for Economic Education).

Il est diplômé de l'université de St Bonaventure en 1982 (BS) et de l'université d'Auburn en 1989 (Ph.D.). Ses thèmes de recherche portent sur les finances publiques, le Droit, la règlementation, la croissance de l'État, l'esclavage et la guerre civile.
