Brian Loasby, économiste britannique, né le 1er août 1930 à Kettering, Northants, est professeur émérité à l'université de Stirling au Royaume-Uni. Etudiant et influencé par George Shackle et par Edith Penrose, il a permis, également, le renouveau de la théorie de la firme par l'école autrichienne dès 1982.

Le principe unique de connexion
Brian Loasby s'est intéressé à savoir comment la coordination des différents individus sur le marché est possible. Il reprend l'analyse de Carl Menger qu'il différencie de celle d'Adam Smith. Pour l'auteur autrichien, les actions sont inscrites dans un plan. Pour accomplir celui-ci, il s'agit pour un individu isolé de définir les besoins à satisfaire et de rechercher comment accéder aux moyens pour réaliser cette satisfaction des besoins. Adam Smith, pour sa part voit la coordination au travers de l'échange et de la division du travail entre différents individus. Carl Menger, n'a pas une position méthodologique aprioriste faisant de l'être humain un être doté d'un penchant naturel pour l'échange. L'épistémologie de Carl Menger est metacognitive et épistémique. L'être humain n'est pas seulement doté de la sagesse, en l'occurrence la connaissance, mais il est aussi doté de la connaissance de la connaissance sur le contrôle des moyens d'accès à la satisfaction des besoins. La recherche d'information sur les accès possibles à la connaissance est une approche épistémique que Brian Loasby qualifie de "principe unique de connexion"[1].
