Ralph Raico est un historien des idées américain, spécialiste des auteurs libéraux européens, en particulier du XIX^e siècle.

Biographie

Après des études à l'université de Chicago, où il a terminé sa thèse sous la direction de Friedrich von Hayek, il rencontre Murray Rothbard et participe à la création du Cercle Bastiat (dont il écrit l'hymne). D'autres intellectuels composent ce club: Leonard P. Liggio, George Reisman, etc. Dans les années 60, il est responsable de la New Individualist Review dans laquelle des auteurs libéraux contemporains, mais aussi plus anciens, sont (re)publiés et étudiés. On y trouve plusieurs articles de Raico consacrés à la redécouverte de libéraux historiques parfois tombés dans l'oubli de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique.

Son impressionnante érudition relative à l'histoire du libéralisme européen ne semble pas connaître de limites et concerne aussi bien les auteurs libéraux français et anglais qu'allemands ou italiens.

Il est aujourd'hui professeur d'Histoire européenne à la State University of New York College, à Buffalo.

Il est également senior faculty member au Mises Institute. Il a reçu de ce dernier le Gary G. Schlarbaum Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Cause of Liberty pour récompenser son engagement historique en faveur des idées libérales^[1]. Libéral et scientifique, il fait partie du bureau éditorial du Journal of Libertarian Studies.
