Biographie
Il devient célèbre en écrivant Anarchie, État et Utopie [PUF, collection libre-échange], où il prend notamment la défense d'un État ultra-minimal. Il base son analyse sur la notion de Droit de propriété de John Locke et il est l'inventeur du terme proviso lockéen.
Son statut d'universitaire lui a valu alors d'être considéré comme le principal théoricien du mouvement libertarien (bien qu'il y ait été initié par Rothbard, comme il le raconte lui-même dans le livre et qu'il délaissa par la suite la philosophie politique, comme le signale Rothbard dans L'Éthique de la liberté).
Il était pour beaucoup l'opposant principal à John Rawls, son collègue de Harvard. C'est donc habituellement à Nozick que se réfèrent les adversaires des libertariens, oubliant ou ne connaissant pas les autres auteurs majeurs de ce mouvement.
