Alan Greenspan, né le 6 mars 1926 à New York, est un banquier central américain, président de la Réserve fédérale, la banque centrale des États-Unis, du 11 août 1987 au 1er février 2006. Après 18 ans de service, il a mis fin au deuxième mandat le plus long pour ce poste.

Dans les décennies 1950 et 1960, Greenspan a donc été proche d'Ayn Rand et du mouvement objectiviste. Cela explique qu'on trouve plusieurs de ses essais repris dans le livre de Rand intitulé Capitalisme, l'idéal inconnu (1966).

Malgré ses sympathies libertariennes, les libéraux lui reprochent généralement d'avoir laissé gonfler la masse monétaire américaine, composante majeure de la crise financière de 2007-2008. D'autres, tel Vincent Bénard de l'Institut Hayek, considèrent qu'il était condamné à se tromper à un moment ou à un autre en raison de l'instabilité inhérente à tout système de banque centrale.

Greenspan était dans les années 1960 fortement en faveur de l'étalon-or (il publie en 1966 dans le journal The Objectivist un vigoureux plaidoyer pour l'étalon-or, typiquement dans l'esprit de l'École autrichienne), ce qui contraste avec sa position par la suite de promoteur de la monnaie fiduciaire sans valeur intrinsèque. D'autres ne partagent pas cette opinion comme Georges Lane dans son exposé reproduit sur Catallaxia, qui soutient que Greenspan est resté fidèle à la philosophie randienne.

Pour Murray Rothbard, Greenspan était un keynésien conservateur, qui différait peu des keynésiens progressistes. Grâce à son passé objectiviste, il passait pour être un partisan du laissez-faire, alors qu'il mettait son "pragmatisme" au service de l'establishment sans souci de cohérence avec des principes philosophiques libéraux.
