John Hood est président de la Fondation John William Pope, un bailleur de fonds basé à Raleigh, en Caroline du Nord, aux USA. Il est aussi président du "John Locke Foundation", un think tank de politique publique.

La Fondation John William Pope soutient les établissements d'enseignement, les programmes artistiques et culturels et le secours humanitaire en Caroline du Nord et au-delà.

John Hood est diplômé en journalisme de l'Université de Caroline du Nord, à Chapel Hill, où il a créé, au milieu des années 1980, un magazine étudiant appelé "The Carolina Critic", qui a finalement grandi pour englober cinq éditions du campus (à l'UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, UNC -Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte, et à l'Université Wake Forest). Il est actuellement président de la Carolina Liberty Foundation, une association qui fournit un soutien financier aux étudiants libéraux et conservateurs.
