Benjamin Powell a rejoint la faculté de l'Université de Suffolk au poste de professeur adjoint d'économie à l'automne 2007. Il a aussi été nommé conjointement au Beacon Hill Institute à l'Université de Suffolk. Avant de rejoindre Suffolk, il était professeur adjoint d'économie à San Jose State University et Directeur du Centre d'innovation sur la création d'entreprises à l'Institut indépendant.

Il s'est intéressé à l'économie au travers des écrits de Milton Friedman, de Friedrich A. Hayek, de Ludwig von Mises et de Murray Rothbard. Il a obtenu son doctorat à l'Université de George Mason en 2003, où il a étudié l'économie de l'école autrichienne et la théorie des décisions publiques.
