William F. Buckley

William Frank Buckley, Jr. est né le 24 novembre 1925 à New York et décédé le 27 février 2008 à Stamford, dans le Connecticut. Il passa ses premières années à Paris où ses parents l'inscrivirent à l'école primaire. Lorsqu'il était encore un jeune homme, son père fit connaissance de l'auteur libertarien, Albert Jay Nock et il encouragea son fils à lire les ouvrages du libertarien américain.

William Buckley fut un auteur conservateur et commentateur américain. Il a fondé le magazine politique "National Review" en 1955 et fut "sans doute" l'intellectuel conservateur le plus important auprès du public des États-Unis durant la deuxième partie du XXème siècle, en compagnie d'autres auteurs comme Russell Kirk et Frank S. Meyer. Il fut un catholique pratiquant, fréquentant régulièrement la messe traditionnelle en latin dans l'Etat du Connecticut. En politique, il permit la fusion entre les ardeurs réactionnaires de l'anti-communisme, du conservatisme politique religieux avec la théorie économique d'une libre économie de marché. N'étant pas un admirateur absolu d'Ayn Rand, en raison des positions ouvertes d'athéisme de la philosophe libertarienne, une mini-lutte entre eux deux s'installa. William Buckley servit le renouveau des idées libérales aux Etats-Unis avec la candidature aux élections présidentielles de Barry Goldwater et il fournit sans aucun doute les bases de la réussite de l'élection présidentielle de Ronald Reagan. Il sut trouver le soutien intellectuel des think tanks comme la Foundation for Economic Education (John Chamberlain) et d'autres intellectuels conservateurs et libéraux (Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn).
