Harold Demsetz, né en 1930 à Chicago (Illinois), est un économiste américain, professeur émérite à UCLA. Il est proche des idées de l'école de Chicago.
Présentation
Il est diplômé de l'université de l'Illinois en 1953, puis obtient son MBA (1954) et son doctorat (1959) à l'université de Northwestern. Il commence sa carrière d'enseignant à l'université du Michigan en 1958 et continue à l'université de Californie à Los Angeles jusqu'en 1963. Là, il rejoint l'université de Chicago où il reste jusqu'en 1971 pour retourner ensuite en Californie. Il obtient un poste dans le département Economique de UCLA de 1978 jusqu'en 1980. De 1984 à 1995, il est nommé à un poste "Arthur Andersen UCLA Alumni".
Il a été l'un des directeurs de la Société du Mont-Pèlerin, une société de pensée réunissant des intellectuels libéraux. Il st également membre de l'American Academy of Arts and Sciences, et a été président de la Western Economics Association en 1996.
Ses travaux ont porté durant sa carrière sur les droits de propriété, sur l'entreprise et sur les questions du monopole, de la concurrence et des politiques antitrust. Ses travaux ont été en particulier influencés par des auteurs comme Frank Knight, Armen Alchian, Ronald Coase, Aaron Director et George Stigler.
Walter Block s'est fortement opposé à l'analyse de Harold Demsetz sur la propriété privée qu'il reproche être trop centrée sur l'efficacité et non sur l'éthique.
