Ludwig Maurits Lachmann (1906-1990) se singularise en utilisant le subjectivisme comme élément d'une relecture critique de l'approche autrichienne. Le subjectivisme n'apparaît pas comme un fondement établi une fois pour toutes mais comme une caractéristique qui doit être approfondie.

Lachmann étudie notamment le rôle et le devenir des institutions. Si la problématique de Hayek est liée aux concepts d'ordre spontané et d'évolution, celle de Lachmann adopte un autre fondement. Conformément à son approche subjectiviste, il va s'interroger sur les institutions à partir d'une réflexion sur les plans qui sont subjectivement formés par les individus.

Il a l’ambition d’élaborer une science générale en sciences sociales. Pour y parvenir, il a recours à des catégories extérieures au seul dogme misésien, par exemple la sociologie économique de Max Weber. En ce sens, Lachmann a fondé une doctrine subjectiviste systématique, plus systématique encore que celle de Menger. Le fait de considérer que l’homme recherche les moyens de survivre avant le loisir ou le plaisir relève d’une approche qui n’est pas authentiquement subjectiviste, et il se peut que cet ordre-là soit plus culturel que naturel.
